Hello everyone,

I have been living in the french Caribbean for quite a few years now and my PR card has expired. I have tickets to go to Canada (direct flight to Canada) for a quick visit at the end of November.

I am an EU citizen and I can visit Canada with an eTA. However, permanent residents are not allowed to apply for an eTA. That is why, about three weeks ago I sent form IMM5782 (Application to Voluntarily Renounce Permanent Resident Status) to the Canadian consulate in Trinidad along with proof of travel. The envelope was delivered with a few days.

I still have not heard back from the consulate and they won't reply to my emails. What should I do? Should I apply for an eTA anyway selecting that I am not a permanent resident and then explain that I assume that I am no longer one?

Thanks to anyone who might have some useful idea :D

I do not think you will get any acknowledgement that you are no longer a PR they will just process the renounce and will not confirm to you. All you can do is apply for the ETA online and explain you sent a renounce application to see what happens, worst case they will have not processed the renounce yet so you would get a letter offering renounce again or a prtd application. Or you could just get a response indicating a longer processing time or you could get a quick response approval.
