Renewing visitor visa (US) while sponsoring inland 2019

I'm sponsoring my fiance (American) through the inland process in a few months when I move back to Canada. The cic.cg.ca thread states that an American doesn't need to apply for a visa to stay in Canada for 180 days, so how would we extend his visa to maintain legal status if we never had to apply for a visa in the first place?
