Hello fellow members.
My wife(citizen)is moving back to canada after 10 years in november. She will be7 months pregnant in november.
Her due date is mid feb.
How much time will OHIP health coverage renwal take?
I have heard that she should be in cananda for 3 months atleast to get her health card renew is this true?
If so then what should we do?
She will have to see a doctor in her last tremester.
Please help thanks.

Absolutely. OHIP has a 3 month mandatory residence requirement before it gets activated. Dont risk it.
Research on costs of Child birth if done outside OHIP coverage. I know of a case who tried something similar, they were billed 17-18K a few months later. In my opinion, the best option is to stay in the PA's home country (if the months arent adding up, OHIP wise).
If the sponsor is a citizen (and the requirements of citizenship by descendency are met), citizenship can be passed on to the newborn even if the birth takes place outside Canada. You will need to apply for Proof of citizenship and temporary passport for the child though.

Just realised you wrote Feb. I think theres plenty of time. You could pay for the doctor check ups outside OHIP as long as delivery related costs are covered under OHIP in February. There shouldnt be a problem. But you might want to send her to Canada before your planned November travel date, to make sure you save a month before your OHIP can kick in. If she goes in October, she can have her OHIP coverage by the end of the year or beginning of the next year.

What ever you decide, keep the 3 month mandatory residence period in consideration

If she go mid october.
So her 3 months will be till mid january.
We have to cancel tickets for november and get mid oct reservation.
She will apply for health card after 3 months stay? Or she can apply in october and will recieve till mid jan?

Any idea if She will apply for card in mid january. Then will recieve that card in 4 to 6 weeks. So will it cover her delivery in mid feb?
Not sure but I believe the card is just proof of coverage. I think The coverage begins if you satisfy the 3 month mandatory residency requirement and Apply for OHIP. So you should be good. Im not entirely sure of the time the card takes to be mailed, and whether its only then that you can consider yourself covered, but i strongly feel the coverage begins once 3 months are passed and you have "applied" for OHIP. @scylla @canuck_in_uk @Ponga @profiler @MM345 .... your inputs required.

Funfact: I think Alberta gives health coverage from day one.
Yes - but if you simply delivery your child in Alberta and then leave shortly afterwards - the province will go after you for the full costs of the birth plus penalties. At that point you're better off paying for it yourself (out of your own pocket).

You will be responsible for any doctors visits, tests, hospital visits for the 3 months until your coverage starts. If you arrive in October you are still very close to your delivery date. It is not unheard of for babies to arrive early so be prepared to cover the costs of delivery. Perhaps best to stay in your country of origin.

If she is in ontario, she can apply anytime during the first three months, but it will be posted to her residential address after 3 months. Once she receives her card, she can start using it
