Renew Permanent Resident but Expired Passport

Hi there,
I am trying to renew my permanent resident and I have everything to submit my application online. One thing I don’t have is a valid passport it expired last year. I know I can still submit a copy of my passport that I used when I first entered Canada.
My question is the passport that I first used to enter Canada is also the same passport my mom used. I didn’t have a separate passport since I was still young. I just need to know well that be okay to use

Get a new passport just in case you need a valid one.

Ok what I am going to do is submit the application.
I am going also going to write a letter writing my situation. While my application gets processed I am going to renew my passport so in case they deny it
