Hello,

I am a Canadian Permanent Resident. My PR card, health card and everything were issued from Ontario as I have only lived in Toronto and Ottawa before. But they have all expired and I am returning to Canada with a Travel Document. This time I will be landing and staying in Montreal. Can I my Ontario Health card from Montreal?

Thanks! :)

In order to be eligible for OHIP, you must reside in Ontario and you must live in Ontario at least 6 months a year. If you have not been living in Ontario for 6 months out of the past 12, you may have lost your coverage.

If your OHIP card is expired as well, you can not renew it from another province. If you want to renew it, you would have to move to Ontario first and then talk to OHIP. Depending on how long you were gone, they would make a decision on renewing it or not. If they would conclude that you were gone so long that you would have lost your coverage, you would be seen as a new resident and would have a 3 month waiting period in order to get health care.

If you are planning on settling in Montreal instead, you can of course skip OHIP and apply for RAMQ which is Quebec health care. As a new resident, you would have to wait 3 months for health care.
