Relocation during Outland processing

Hi everyone,

I recently submitted an Outland PR application (sponsored by my Canadian common-law partner).

Just out of the blue I have received a job offer in the USA that is hard to refuse. If I was to take it my partner and our one child would all relocate together. The position would be for 1-2 years, then we'd likely come back to Canada.

I'm curious to know how this would affect our PR application? Are we allowed to move away from Canada during the processing? I know with the Outland route I am able to travel outside Canada, but I'm not aware of rules surrounding the sponsor and principal applicant relocating outside of Canada.

If the sponsor is a Canadian citizen my understanding is it would be fine (someone please correct me if I am wrong) but the issue you're going to have I believe is when you get DM you have to land in Canada within a certain window.

OK thanks! But as long as I land within that window it would be OK? I won't be far from the border anyway.

And yes sponsor is Canadian citizen by birth.

Once you become a PR you have to meet certain requirements with respect to time spent in Canada...hopefully a more senior resource can weigh in with specifics or to correct me.

Oh yes. We do plan to relocate back. It was my understanding though that as long as I'm living with the sponsor we can renew the PR every 5 years (if we haven't lived in Canada long enough to qualify for citizenship)

Time spent living in Canada
When you are a permanent resident, you can live outside of Canada, but must live in Canada for at least two years in a five-year period. If you live outside of Canada for longer, you may lose your permanent resident status.

There is an exception to this requirement if you have a Canadian citizen spouse. Living abroad with your Canadian citizen spouse counts towards your permanent residency residence requirement

As long as your sponsor is a Canadian citizen, it's perfectly fine. It just means you need to submit a bit more proof. For sponsors living outside of Canada, they need to submit proof and a plan that they will indeed be returning to Canada once the sponsorship is granted. I would recommend searching the forum for "sponsor living outside Canada" because it's a common thing to be discussed. Ultimately as long as you can provide the proof it will not be an issue
