Hi Everyone,

I am currently in Canada on a work permit and plan to apply for Permanent Residency (PR) soon. I am an Indian citizen, and I married a Canadian citizen in October this year back home in India with all the legal and religious formalities. Our marriage has been officially registered in India at the Sub-Divisional Magistrate's office, and we possess the Indian marriage certificate with us. Now we are back in Canada.

I would like to know whether it is necessary to register our marriage in Canada as well. If not, are there any potential consequences or challenges I may face in the future, particularly in relation to my PR application or other legal matters?

Thankyou.

There is no such procedure as registration of foreign marriages in Canada. The presumption under law is basically that foreign marriages are recognized (with limited but well-known exceptions, like polygamous marriages).

Your foreign marriage doc will be recognized in most cases where it's needed (incl for sponsorship) as long as in English or French original (or certified translation + notarized copy if not).
