Hi everyone,

I know most of us are waiting for Citizenship tests to be resumed and the backlog is piling up day by day, some of us are even missing their loved ones due to this slow process.
Some of us are even contacting local MPs and sending emails.

I think it will be better to contact and send formatted emails to our new leader of opposition Erin O Toole to take up this issue and raise it in the parliament, As we are the future citizens and voters of this country, I think they will respond immediately.
Instead of sending emails to local MPs it will be better to contact the opposition.
What everyone thinks?

Do you have any idea who O'Toole is, or who O'Toole's primary supporters are? Where his allegiances truly lie? How he got to be the leader of the Conservatives?

I do not share the view that if a Conservative government is elected that current citizenship applications are at risk of being outright rejected based on changes in the law, which more than a few forum participants have been claiming will happen rather vehemently. Which is among their loudest reasons why it is important to push for resuming testing before there is a chance the Conservatives win an election. That is grossly unfounded fear-mongering. Merely a theoretical possibility but in-practice NOT-at-ALL possible, even if the Conservatives were to win enough seats in Parliament to form a majority government.

But make no mistake, not only are the Conservatives generally far, far less sympathetic to issues like this, O'Toole is well to the more strict, not-at-all-friendly to such issues side of the Conservative Party. Politically quite to the Right of Stephen Harper. Harper being the last Conservative Party PM of Canada. On Harper's watch the routine processing time, no covid or other pandemic looming, went to TWO plus years, with scores and scores of citizenship applicants waiting THREE to FOUR and more years. Harper's government increased the minimum presence in Canada to FOUR years with NO credit for time in Canada prior to becoming a PR. Harper implemented a provision that gave CIC authority to outright deny a citizenship application if the applicant was determined to be living outside Canada after applying. Harper implemented changes in the law which allowed the government to revoke citizenship based on the commission of certain specified crimes EVEN for BORN-in-Canada citizens!

I do not think O'Toole would drag citizenship and immigration back into those ditches but that would be because the general Canadian population has amply voiced its opposition to those policies and practices. But that is where his views lean, strongly, perhaps significantly more severely if not harshly. Remember, as a MP he voted in favour of ALL those, including supporting the fast tracking of the legislation that truncated debate, including blocking debate on really important elements of those changes like the intent-to-continue-residing-in-Canada requirement for citizenship. He became a Minister and member of Harper's Cabinet.
