Hi everyone, I’m wondering if someone here can help clarify correspondence I just received from the “Centralized Intake Office” in Sydney, Nova Scotia. They are requesting additional information, but I’m unsure of what exactly they are asking for. Here is what the email says:

2017 Notice of Assessment or an Option C Print: For the period specified, provide an original OPTION C-Printout (this document is different from the Notice of Assessment and is available free-of-charge by calling the Canada Revenue Agency at 1-800-959-8281) This must be received at this office by: 2018/11/30

Has anyone else here received this request? If so, what is the best way to go about handling it? Also, if anyone can explain to me what an “2017 Notice of Assesment” or an “OPTION C-Printout” is, and which one would be best to send, I would greatly appreciate it.

The notice of assessment is the official letter you get back from CRA once you've filed your 2017 taxes. You would have received it sometime from February to May of 2018. An "Option C" printout is similar, and you can find instructions on how to order it here: https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/e-services/e-services-individuals/a-proof-income-statement-option-print.html

I haven’t been a resident of Canada since 2015 when I moved to the United States on a K1 Fiance(e) Visa. I was officially declared by the CRA to be a “non-resident” in June of that year. I have no tax return from 2017, having been informed by the CRA that as I am officially an “non-resident” who has had zero employment in Canada since leaving the country and no significant assets or ties to Canada, I do not need to file a Canadian tax return unless I worked in Canada and/or moved back. My husband and I file jointly here in the U.S. and those tax returns were included in our application.

I’m thinking now that I’m going to be denied approval as a sponsor. I’m beyond stressed. I waited over 3 months for them to request documentation that doesn’t exist.

You have documentation of your non-resident status from CRA? File that. Your visa officer may just not have understood that you are non-resident for tax purposes. Write a letter of explanation to go along with it. Request a zero records available Option C for 2017. This doesn't mean you're going to be denied as a sponsor, because there is no income requirement for sponsorship of a spouse.

Thank you very much for this information and advice. Yes, I do have written documentation of my official non-resident status. I will definitely be including that.

How do you get this? I never told anyone that I was leaving. I was told it is assumed after you take official residence in another country (for me the US) and don't file taxes (as I have nothing to file). I've been in the US since 2015...how do I do this to avoid delays or denial of my application?

After I moved to the U.S. in 2015, I called the CRA. I believe they sent me the forms. (Maybe you can find them online as well). They then make a determination on your residency status based on the information you provide.
