So, my husband has an annoying spelling error in his legal name. It's been there forever - a dash between his first and middle names instead of a space. Someone at the registry office in Austria messed up and his parents never bothered to fix it when he was a kid.
Think John-Jacob Smith instead of John Jacob Smith (not his real name). He's gone by "John" his entire life and that's the name I know him by, but his passport and legal documents all say "John-Jacob".
Doing all of this paperwork for the PR process has reminded him how annoying it is to have the "wrong" name on all of his legal documents. So he wants to change it eventually.
The problem is, we're not sure if that's even possible to do from Canada, even after his PR is finalized. His PR card will have the "wrong" spelling on it, just like his passport, driver's license, and everything else. Can a PR legally change their name in Canada, or does it need to be changed first in his country of citizenship? What do PR holders do if they get married and want to change their name? How does that work?
