Re-entering on extended visitor status?

Hello all,

I am an Australian citizen and entered Canada in January this year as a visitor with no restrictions so had 6 months to stay. I applied in March and was granted a visitor extension until the end of this year. I applied because my girlfriend is Canadian and I said I wanted to stay longer to explore the relationship. My life is here now for the time-being and I'm in the process of applying for a Work Holiday Visa.

I wish to leave the country in early June to visit my family while they are on holiday for 2 weeks in Morocco. I am applying for a work holiday visa which I was hoping to have to re-enter on, however it is now clear that the work holiday visa will not be processed in time.

My visitor extension clearly says "This does not authorize re-entry". If I leave in June for 2 weeks is there much chance I would be denied re-entry (as a visitor)? Will the extension support my re-entry?

Are there any other options I could consider to guarantee or increase my likelihood of being let back in after leaving for 2 weeks?

Thanks very much for any help or opinions, it is greatly appreciated!

The extension will not support your re-entry. The extension is invalidated as soon as you leave Canada.

Unfortunately there's nothing you can do to guarantee re-entry (the decision about what happens is in the hands of the immigration officer you encounter).

To increase your chances of a smooth entry, it helps if you are not spending most of your time in Canada (then it starts looking like you're living here which you're not allowed to do as a tourist). Based on what you've said, you're already walking this very fine line. So I'd recommend you try to show the following: proof of strong ties to Australia, proof that you have sufficient funds to pay for your visit to Canada, a return/exit ticket (this will demonstrate that your visit is only temporary and you have no plans to overstay), etc.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your reply.

It looks I don't have much choice but to cancel my trip to see my family, which is pretty heartbreaking as I really miss them.

Does anyone else have a different or similar opinion?

I agree with what Syclla said. The thing is (and a problem I also had with the immigration officers) that you shouldn't look like you are living more in Canada than you are in your own country. I was denied entry once and barelyyyyy didnt get let in the last time I was there. Like Syclla said showing proof is the best thing for you. Also a return ticket did not work for me, nothing really worked for me. The only thing that ever worked for me was when I had my then bf (now fiancé) telling them I would leave, but in the meantime he and his family would take care of me. And since then I was never able to apply for an extension, but report to the immigration officers.

So a letter of invitation was what worked for you?
