Questions regarding temporary work permit

Hi everybody,

I would very much appreciate if you could help me and maybe answer the questions I have regarding my temporary work permit, since contacting the Canadian embassy by phone and email is sooo time consuming and frustrating..

Okay- I am a medical doctor from Germany but permanently working and living in Switzerland. My home institution built up a cooperation with the University of Toronto and I will have the opportunity to do 3 months of research in the Lab in Toronto.
I received a letter of Engagement from Canada 10 days ago and already contacted the Embassy but still a lot of questions remain unanswered..

I will be paid by my home institution and are LMO exempt- thats what I already now.. Since I should start working in Canada at June 1st and time is running short I simply don't know, if I should still apply from outside Canada (online) or if there is the chance to apply at the port of entry.. Furthermore, I will need a medical examination from a panel physician, but unfortunately due to the easter holidays the next possible appointment will be the 29th of April meaning further delay..

What would you suggest in my situation? Still apply asap online? Do you know if I may hand in the medical exam later and will there still be enough time that the work permit can be issued to me until June 1st?

What I definitely want to avoid is, that my work permit cannot be issued to me before my flight to Canada, or will I be still permitted to enter Canada, even if the work permit is still in process? If the time will not be enough, would it be wiser to apply for the work permit at the port of entry?

I am very grateful for all your answers!

Sebastian

Why do you have to take medicals BEFORE applying? Generally people apply for work permit and get request for medicals in most of the countries i do know of.

One can only apply for work permit at the POE if

a) You are from a visa exempt country i.e. do not require a visa to VISIT Canada.
b) You are not from a profession that requires medical (live in caregiver etc.)

I am not sure how that works in Germany. But i didn't see on the website that medical is mandatory. What makes you think you will have to do it?

If you don't require medicals and are visa exempt, you sure should get WP at the port of entry. Just be over cautious and bring all possible documents needed along. CBSA in general is very happy if you are carrying every needed doc and the process is a breeze then.

UPDATE:

I some how missed that fact that you are a doctor. So you would need medicals

Which probably means you cannot get it at POE. I remember reading some time back that if you require a medical before hand, you cannot get wp at POE
