Questions from a soon-to-be sponsor

Hi. I'm a 22 year old male, Canadian citizen, who will soon be sponsoring. My fiance (19 year old female) and I will be married next year in June, and we are planning to start the process afterwards of bringing her to Canada. She is from Wisconsin.

There were a few questions we had that we want to get sorted out before she comes down nest summer. Any help at all would be great!

1.) The Application Forms. Let's say that we wanted to start working on these forms in the new year. What if I complete a form in March, and in April the form is then updated? How big of a deal is it? Would I have to start that form over? And if so, how often are these forms updated and when should we start?

2.) What sort of things should she do BEFORE coming here for her visit next summer? As in, what tasks would be easier for her to complete back home than from here with me in Canada while visiting?

3.) The medical. I think I am clear on all of the rules of getting the medical examination, but does anyone know how it usually takes to get an appointment for one? The closest certified doctor to her is in Chicago. If these appointments take something like months to get, it might be wise to get started I suppose.

4.) Background/Criminal Record check. Basically same question as above, in regards to length of time to have this completed.

I think that was all the things we were unclear about at the moment. Probably will have more questions when the time comes closer

1) Check the form dates online before you send them. Check every one, it's not that hard to figure out as they display the dates clearly on the website. We had to open our app at the last minute and redo a form, it is a big deal as people have had their apps returned due to outdated forms.

2) That I can't answer, that depends on her really.

3) Call the office and ask, every doc is different. But, they may not be busy now, and may be busy next year, and visa-versa.

4) It takes about 3 months to get, and is good for 6 months. So, request this about 3 months before you intend to submit your docs. Be sure to send multiple versions of her finger prints if you get the ink-and-roll method.

2) if you meant about gathering all immigration docs, you can get a check list (depends on you apply for inland or outlined).
there would be docs she need to get in America.


3) As Aquakitty mentioned, call a doc in your or her area then you can make app now.
Medical is only good for a year. so if she would do medical now (more than 6 month prior to send app), CIC might ask re medical while processing her file.
so I would decide first where she would get medical in Canada or America then book an app before you send app.
(ex- I am in MB, I had to wait a month to get medical check)

Thanks to you both, this clears some things up. Just one follow-up question:

With the medical and police check... What if it expires during the waiting period between sending the application and the time they get a chance to look at it?

The waiting period for Ottawa is 17 months and if a police check only is good for 6, I don't quite understand. Unless they do not count this period.

VO(visa officer) would request fresh docs if he/she would not satisfy with what you sent while processing your file.
so as long as you sent docs before they are expired, you should be fine.

Okay, that sounds about right. We're just going through the pre-planning stages of making sure we know what we're talking about so when the new year rolls around, we can get started.

I've seen on several forms something along the lines of this form must be filled out by "you and all family members 18 or over", such as the police check. What exactly does that entail? I'm only bringing over my wife, so does she just do the police check or does she even need her parents (who she lives with but are not coming with her) to do one as well?
