Questions for Visitor Visa - after landing

Hello Everyone,

Alhamdulillah (الحمد لله) today i have received my Mother's Visitor Visa stamped on her passport - she got 10 years Multiple Entry.
Time Taken for approval : exact 2 months (applied from Pakistan, stamped from Abu Dhabi)

I have some questions after this, appreciate if someone can help me out :

1). I was told that they always get Multiple Entry, but it's the Custom official (after landing here) who decides how long her one length of stay can be. So isn't it 6 months by default. And if yes, then what is the Custom official's role in all of this.

2). Need from all of you, name and number of some good & trust-worthy Insurance brokers/agent - so that i can get some quotations and if the time ever comes (God forbid), apply for Visitor Insurance.

3). Once here, if i want to apply for her extension, how much time-line is healthy and right enough for this (i.e. before her six months are over)

4). What's the procedure for applying for Visitor Visa (TRV) renewal and what documents are required. Appreciate if someone can give detailed info in this regard.

5). The Insurance we take for Visitors, what it does and does-not covers.

6). Is it considered as a good sign if you just keep on extending the TRV applications or are there any limitations to this.

Thanks in advance to all the contributors here.

1) Correct. The CBSA officer decides at the border how long a visit is granted. I'm not sure what you mean by "what is their role in this" - they are the ones who decide. This doesn't change the fact that your mother has a multiple entry visa. What it impacts is how long she is being allowed to enter Canada on this specific visit.
3) I think you're asking about an extension - not a renewal? Extensions allow someone to stay in Canada longer than originally allowed by the CBSA officer. Apply towards the very end of her allowed visit. Make sure the extension application reaches CIC before her current visit expires.
5) Insurance typically covers emergencies only. You will have to pay for all other care out of your own pocket.
6) Again, I think you're asking about an extension and not a renewal. Assuming you are asking about an extension, they won't extend indefinitely. Sooner or later your mother will be told to return home.

1). Yes, officially it is upto the Immigration officer who will decide. However, I haven't seen anyone who got any time less than a month. It's better to say to him that we are planning to stay for 3-4 month instead of saying 15 days.

2). Search Online. I am not so sure about it. Blue cross comes to my mind.

3). She will have to make an exit after 6 months no matter what ...unless she has a super visa. It has something to do with not staying somewhere more than 183 days . This is how you become eligible for taxes & health coverage etc.

4). Never did that. I guess same as initial TRV. Use CIC eligibility tool to create a mock-extension application you will get the list.

5). Devil is in the details. it depends on what are you buying. Maybe someone with first hand experience can help.

6). I don't think it is possible. if she wants to stay longer she will have get super visa or permanent residence. You can't keep extending TRV and stay in Canada.

There was a forum member who entered Canada last week and was only given four days.

We see plenty of cases here where someone is only given 2-3 weeks.

Having said that, many/most are given the full 6 months.

This means there is no such period of default 6 months. It's on the discretion of the CBSA Officer to decide the 'stay period/length of stay'

3) I think you're asking about an extension - not a renewal? Extensions allow someone to stay in Canada longer than originally allowed by the CBSA officer. Apply towards the very end of her allowed visit. Make sure the extension application reaches CIC before her current visit expires.
Yep i meant Extension. Thanks for highlighting this. Made the correction in my question.

5) Insurance typically covers emergencies only. You will have to pay for all other care out of your own pocket.
God forbid in emergency, is 'everything' covered then?

Yep, correction made in my question.
