Questions about re-entry

Hi Everyone,

I just have a quick question about re-entry.

My wife was in Canada for a six month stay on a visitor visa. I am a Canadian Citizen and she is from South Korea. She arrived in Canada in May and her visa was valid until September. We applied to extend her visitor visa in June. We applied with a letter requesting re-entry.

Her and I both returned to Korea for our wedding ceremony in mid-september (We had planned our wedding almost a year ago and there was no going back at that time). I came back alone as her visitor visa had expired. All total she has been away from Canada since September 7th.

Today I received her extension in the mail. CIC has printed at the bottom of the visa ***THIS DOES NOT AUTHORIZE RE-ENTRY***

My question is... if I mail her this Visa will she be able to enter Canada.

No - she won't be able to re-enter Canada. An extension is only valid as long as you remain in Canada. (It's not possible to request re-entry with an extension.)

Because she has left Canada the extension is useless. She will have to apply for a new visitor visa if she wants to re-enter Canada.

Maybe you got confused by calling it extension of visa. When it's actually extension of "stay". An expired visa doesn't get extended. You'll have to apply for a new one to gain entry to Canada.

Thanks for your replies. It looks like we will have to apply for a new visa from outside of Canada.

I have two concerns though:
- Will there be confusion in the Immigration system when they go to approve a new visitor visa and see that an extension to her old visa has just been issued?
- Will we have to wait the requisite 6 months before she can come back?

Thanks again

I'm not sure what you mean by "the requisite 6 months". She can apply immediately.

OK, After doing some more research we found out that she doesn't need a Visa prior to landing in Vancouver. As per

cic.gc.ca/english/visit/visas.asp?country=Korea,%20Republic%20of

Does this mean that she can simply board a plane and come back? In the past she has been issued a 6 month visa at the airport.
I've been finding that CIC is nightmare when it comes to talking with someone in person. I would like to get a straight answer from them but if anyone here has had experience with this my thanks in advance.

(She will be flying with translated notarized proof of our marriage and a 6mo return ticket)
