Thanks so much again SFD. Carol is quite competant, but SD is a big city. I've given her the information, but I'm leaving the decision up to her. Arlette

Ok, another question, if you go to Santo Domingo in person, you can pay with cash correct? The Canadian visa website, like most government sites, is jam packed with words, but it is clear as mud. It seems to suggest that you need a certified check if you are mailing it in, and that you can use US dollars or pesos if you come in person, correct? I mean, why would you need a check, if you have cash and you are taking the cash directly to the bank?

Of course government agency seldom make sense to begin with...lol ??? Thanks yet again!
God Bless, Arlette

Yes, she can take cash. She can pay in pesos if she wants; they will use the exchange rate of the day.

She won't need to take a taxi. My bf and I had zero idea of where the Acropolis Centre was when we were taking the Metro to SD. I had just been told from a coworker that it was walking distance.... But when the bus is coming into Santo Domingo, it will go right by the Acropolis Centre (where the embassy is located) so she will see it. Tell her to look out the left window! It will take her about 5 minutes or so to walk there.

Arlette,

If my memory doesn´t betraye me, one needs to make a deposit a the Scotia Bank which is located at the same place (Acropolis Tower). I go very often to the Embassy: I will ask next time... HOWEVER, NO CASH IS ACCEPTED... PLEASE, SOMEONE CORRECT ME...

Yes, money needs to be deposited into the Canadian Embassy account at the Scotia bank in the Acropolis Centre. YES the money can be paid in cash. My boyfriend and I paid in cash (pesos) in October when we were paying th visitors visa fee. They will deposit it into the account for you and give u a receipt showing that the money has been deposited into the correct account, which you will submit with your application papers.

Please don´t misunderstand when I say cash is NOT accepted... I mean at the embassy... At the bank... That is another game...

Anyway, hope that with all the inputs provided by the group, enough info has been gathered...

Hi Arlette,

Please can you tell me exactly what type of documents did you need to have prepared on your end from Canada. My finance of two years , I plan on going through the visa process as well. I believe he is pretty sure he knows what he needs on his end, however I am not sure what I need. I do plan to go to the application process review with him. However I want to make sure that I have all documents buttoned up before we take that route. All information that you can provide me to help make this process an easier one would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards

Thank you so much!!

Hi HI All, So sorry not to have been back and leave you hangin'. Well, Carol was ready to go for her visa two weeks ago when we noticed a couple of important things we (I) overlooked: a letter from her school the main one. So we postponed going to SD until she got that...also I failed to notice that each sponsor document must have the applicant's name and birthdate on it, so that got fixed. I did end up using DHL to send the sponsor documents to her...$72, not too bad.
SOOOO, she will be going Monday morning very early on the bus from Puerto Plata to Santo Domingo to try for her visa. I think we've got everything now. There are little details you must be precise on with the application! I will for sure let you know how it goes. Thanks so much again. We couldn't have done this without your help. God Bless

OK Purdylol...hope you got some of your questions answered. But if not, is your fiance coming from DR too? You are sponsoring/hosting his visit? You probably have seen the visa application site for DR? There is a checklist which tells you what you need to provide as a sponsor. Here's the link. http://www.canadainternational.gc.ca/dominican_republic-republique_dominicaine/assets/pdfs/TRV_checklist_Updated_Feb2011_ENG.pdf

Just read it all very carefully. I provided a notarized "letter of invitation" that I got done at a local lawyer's office, a copy of my passport (notarized), a copy of my income tax assessment (notarized), and a copy of my bank statement. These show that I have enough funds to pay for my friend's visit. I also provided a rough itinerary during her visit, and the tentative flight arrangements which I'm booking through Expedia - you can print out the unbooked itinerary which is handy.
You have to make sure you put the applicant's name and birthdate on each document. If you have anymore questions, I'll check back. Arlette

Thanks for asking Scylla...

this is starting to become a soap opera: "Tune in tomorrow when you'll find out if our heroin gets her visa" ;)

Well, Carol got to SD very early Monday on the sort of unofficial bus, but then of course she had to wait until 9am anyway for the bank to open. She said there was a long line at the visa office on the 18th floor. I guess because there were so many applicants, she will have to go back Thursday to find out if she got the visa. She said she felt confident about it...not sure why. I've not had a chance to get the details of the visit. But, on the way back, they took the Caribe tours bus which broke down, so they had to wait for another. A very long and exhausting day.

So, the official day is Thursday at 2pm to find out. Sorry to keep you all in suspense, but I appreciate your support. I'll let you know as soon as I hear what happens! Still praying :) Arlette

Re: Questions about my Dominican friend's visa application/Not a Happy Ending

Hi Everyone...well, I'm totally dismayed :'( that after all the work we did and money spent, with all the crossing of the t's and dotting of the i's, they would not give my friend Carol a visa to visit us in Canada. I would at least want an explanation. I can't see any reason for it. She's only 22, not someone to go traipsing off to try to stay in a strange countryon her own, if that is their worry. My only thought was that perhaps the itinerary I wrote up wasn't specific enough...partly because there wasn't that much to tell. This was what was on the intinerary:

<<Departing Puerto Plata (POP) – 2:00pm on Westjet flight #2617
Arrive in Toronto (YYZ) – 6:15pm

Departing Toronto (YYZ) – 9:30pm on Westjet flight #569
Arrive in Thunder Bay – 11:11pm

Carol will be vacationing for approximately one week with us at ** Ray Blvd. Thunder Bay, Ontario until Saturday August 6th - at which time Carol will accompany Raymond and Arlette on a car trip to Toronto while visiting relatives in Barrie and Whitby along the way. We plan to spend several days with Carol visiting some sights around southern Ontario before accompanying her to Toronto Pearson airport for her flight home on August 12th, 2011.
Departing Toronto (YYZ) – 9:30am on Westjet flight #2616
Arrive in Puerto Plata (POP) – 12:58pm>>

Perhaps I should have mentioned that we were staying in hotels on the trip...and that the relatives were Ray's. I just didn't think that precisely. I hope it wasn't my fault. Carol is of course VERY upset, as am I. I am going to call my Member of Parliament tomorrow...I at least want an explanation, that is only fair. If they are going to cull people on the basis of gut feeling or "profiling", then they should make it clear on their website who they won't give a visa to and spare all the unnecessary waste of time, money and heart ache. I think what they are doing to people in DR is very cruel. If they operated that way with Canadians applying for a passport, we'd be outraged. They should at least give the person a chance to rectify any missing or less than perfect documents. I assume they keep everything and send you packing. I've not had a chance to talk to Carol as she had to catch the late bus back to POP.

Sorry, I think I'm angry  more than anything. Ok, if you have any advice for future recourse, that would be good...if not, thanks again!
Very puzzled in Canada, Arlette
PS, that is the Aruban flag...I love that place and the flag is pretty...lol
