Question regarding work permit extension

Hello everyone

A friend of mine moved to Montreal about a year ago. Both she and her husband had open work permits(her husband was the main client and works in the VFX industry. Graphic design and Illustrators NOC 52120).

Her husband's work permit expires in 2026 and hers expires in august 2025.

Initially, she was told that she can apply for an extension but now the IRCC has told her that after January 2025, it's no longer possible to apply for an extension and she must apply for a new visa.

I was wondering if anyone had a similar experience and if so, what needs to be done and can she apply for a new work permit or another type of visa ?

Why the discrepancy in expiry dates? Passport expiry? Is she on an SOWP?

Her husband has a closed work permit and is working for a company.
She has an open work permit. She came as a visitor and applied for an open work permit.

What exact NOC code does he work in and when does his WP expire? Less than 16 months?

Thank you for reply.

However, after answering a couple of questions from the questionnaire at the end, she got a message saying that it maybe possible to extend it if they meet 3 requirements. (They're in Canada / Their current work permit is valid for a shorter period of time than the principal applicant / They apply to extend their work permit before their initial work permit expires.)
