Hi,

I am a US Citizen married to an Indian Citizen with two Indian Citizen Children (Ages 11 and 6). We have been resident in India the past 11 years and I have an OCI card.

I am taking a 3 year medicine course in BC and have been accepted by the institution and will be bringing my whole family. My question is about "dependent visa types." since we are applying all together through Student Direct Stream. I assume my wife should apply for an Open Work Permit visa. We actually have enough money and she does not need to work, but she might want to do some online tutoring.

For the children, should they apply for study permits or visitor visa? According to the IRCC website, minors do not need study permits to study in Canadian schools if one of their parents is on a study permit. Yet I see some of the school websites are talking about "International Students" needing a study permit.

Can anyone help? What would be the best visa types for my wife and children?

Thanks

Hi,

Yes, apply for OWP for your spouse.
For school-age children (6 and up), apply for Study permit for them. TRV for younger kids.

It's best that you apply for everyone at once as that's the only way they will be allowed to travel with you as per COVID rules. There are no guarantees however that there permits/visas will be granted...same with yours.

All the best.
