question about religious work while spousal PR in process

Hello everyone,

I am US citizen that's currently a principal applicant of an Outland Spousal Family Class application that's staying in Canada as a visitor with my wife. Our application was submitted and received by the CIC last month. For the last two years, I was working as a Catholic Youth Missionary worker in the United States.

During my time here as a visitor, I was researching online on the CIC website and I noticed that jobs for religious purposes (clergy/lay people) may not require a work permit. After seeing this I inquired within the Archdiocese of Vancouver for jobs at local catholic parishes and I actually received a call-back and will be attending an interview this evening for a Youth Ministry Coordinator position at one of the local catholic churches. The job description is very similar to what I was already doing in the US, just on a more local level. After searching through the CIC website again, I found another similar but confusing description stating that religious workers still need a work permit but do not require a labour market opinion.

My main question consists of two parts: would this category of work require a work permit or not? and secondly, because I have an outland spousal application in process, would I be able to work AT ALL during the waiting process, even if the job falls within the exception rules. Someone with expertise on this please advise. I wouldn't want to go and do anything jeopardizing my PR application which is the priority at the moment, and I wouldn't want the parish doing anything against any rules, especially unknowingly. Thanks.

I can't answer your first question.

As for your second question, working will not jeopardize your PR application providing you obtain a work permit or the job falls into an exclusion category and no work permit is required.

Take a look at the Foreign Worker's Manual.

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/resources/manuals/fw/fw01-eng.pdf

In the index you will see "Work Without a Work Permit R186(l): Clergy

Scroll down to page 38 for the explanation.

Hope that helps!

The OP needs a WP but does not need LMO.

thanks for the help...

yes it looks like i would be required to apply for the work permit in my case. so just to double check, this does not look bad in anyway for my PR application? (considering im currently on a visitor record that specifically states i cannot work during this time... i assume of course that changes as long as i legally obtain a WP correct?)

Hello,

i'm in a similar position. i know working does not affect PR application. Did you end up applying for work permit?
if so, how did you determine your stipend?
