Question about Metal-Dots as in "Ä"

So to verify the generic application form and generate the barcode-pages i had to spell out my (german) last Name with "ae" in place of "ä".
This is a common way of doing this, but in my Passport it is of course written with the german "ä".

I added a note explaining this, but now am unsure how to proceed with the other forms.

Should i now always write my Name with "ae" in place of "ä", even on forms that do not have to be verified?
Should i just have spelled it with the "ä" as in the passport, and not include barcode-pages?

Would it be OK to validate and print the form with the letter "a" in the last name in place of "ä", and then just adding the dots by hand with a pen?
