Query regarding SIN number

Hello Everyone,
i am currently studying 2 years business management program (with Co-op) in Lambton college Toronto Campus, On, Canada. i am in Canada since 4 months. It has come to my notice that some of my classmates have got work permit along with study permit on their arrival in Toronto airport. however i have come to know that we get SIN number after completing 6 months of study. Till then we can't work in Toronto. But those student who have received study permit have gt sin number irrespective whether they have completed 6 months or not. i further looked into the matter and came to know that this work permit is been given on a random basis(i might be misinformed ), which is not documented anywhere in CIC. if that is the case then all those who haven't received the work permit (like me) feel that injustice is been done to them. i would appreciate if anyone has a amicable and justifiable answer to this. Thank you

ur confusing two separate things coop work permit is different than off campus work permit. if ur degree requires working then u can apply for coop work permit along with ur study permit however u cannot work on that work permit on a part time job ...the coop work permit has restrictions of working in ur field and has to be approved by ur college. off campus work permit is issued after 6 months of study and u can work any job for 20hrs per week while ur studying. u can get SIN once u have any work permit it doesn't need to be after 6 months and in some cases u get SIN for on campus jobs without work permit.
