Hi,

I got married 5 months ago to a Canadian permanent resident, residing in my country of origin (marriage took place outside Canada). After returning to Canada, I declared the change in marital status and submitted the marriage certificate issued from my country of origion to CIC as proof of marriage. I returned to my country of origin last month to do the marriage reception and function. As a common cultural practice, during this time the spouse was residing with her parents and we never lived together and never consummated the marriage. Due to some change in circumstances my spouse asked to end the relationship and the I initiated the process for termination of marriage. As per the country's law where the marriage was registered and the petition for divorce is registered, the law requires a waiting period of 90 days (during which a council tries to push for a reconciliation), if the reconciliation doesn't happen then the divorce certificate is issued.

We both have agreed that reconciliation is not possible and mutually decided to move on with our lives.

Do I have to inform CIC of my change in marital status,

Do I also have to register a divorce in a court /govt office in Canada since I declared the status change to CIC ?

She is a permanent resident of Canada but I had applied my immigration independently via Express entry.

Can you help me how to proceed with this.

Thanks alot.

My understanding: You need to inform them any change to your marital status before landing. Since your divorce hasn't finalized yet, there is no need to inform them now.
