Hey fellow immigration warriors,

So I just saw the news that Quebec has basically hit “Pause” on new spousal sponsorship applications until June 2026. Like… excuse me?!

Is anyone else feeling like they accidentally selected “Hard Mode” on this immigration game?

Seriously though, to my Quebec folks:

Are you thinking of packing your bags for Ontario or New Brunswick to dodge this madness?

Were you just about to apply and now feel totally derailed?

Has anyone successfully moved their plans to another province before? How complicated was it?

And for those mid-process… how does it feel to have just applied before this madness?

I’m in total shock because I’ve never seen something like this happen in Canada before. It feels surreal, and honestly, I feel awful for everyone caught in the middle.

Drop your timelines, your rants, your memes, or your master plans for escaping this bureaucratic black hole. Let’s crowdsource some survival strategies.

Wishing you all some natural 20s on your immigration rolls.

Aren't you in BC? This only impacts Quebec applicants.

Yeah, the Quebec "Pause" on spousal sponsorships is a huge shock. If you're in Quebec, it might make sense to consider moving to Ontario or New Brunswick if you're not too far along. Switching provinces isn’t simple, but it’s possible if you want to keep the process moving forward. For those who were about to apply, it must feel like a total derailment, and for those already in the process, at least you're ahead of the changes. Stay hopeful—this is just a setback, not the end!

Honestly, I’m just following this because I find it shocking that an entire province could pause spousal sponsorships like that. Even though I’m in BC, I feel for the people in Quebec who might be stuck or forced to change plans.

Immigration already feels like a rollercoaster, so hearing about something this big makes me curious how folks are coping or if anyone’s considering moving provinces to avoid the delay.

So I'm quite far along in the process (full timeline in my signature), but one thing I found of interest was within 24hrs of QC shutting down the Spousal stream I ended up with an email in my inbox asking for the remainder of my Right to Permanent Residence fee -- which, I had paid the right to permanent residence fee when I submitted my application in Nov 2023, but because they had increased the price in April 2024, they wanted me to pay the new price (which imo is extortion, but that's a convo for another thread...)

But that was the first contact I've had from them in more than a year. And usually it's a pretty good indicator that they're gong to be approving the application. So I'm hoping to see my P1 in 3-4 weeks.

But my point in mentioning this is that shutting down the stream seemed to have a bit of a ripple effect for applications already in progress. So my hope is that closing the stream will improve processing times and that they will be able to use this time to better focus on draining their backlog so that they can start fresh when the stream opens again.

The cynical side of me thinks they're gonna twiddle their thumbs and end up announcing in 2026 that the backlog is too full still and they'll be keeping it closed until further notice.

Wonder what happens to PGP. Tough to keep PGP open if spousal sponsorship and economic programs have been closed recently.
