Quebec application - no knowledge of French

Hi Fellows,

I have got my assesment done from several places, including from David Cohen, and all the results indicate that I am eligible for a Quebec immigration under the Quebec Provincial immigration system.

My doubt is that I have no knowledge of french, but I suppose that if and whne i get my quebec visa and I come down to quebec to become a landed immigrant the customs officials will interview me in french - is there a chance that I will get rejected at this point.

I am told that my iimigration time line will be more than a year, and that I can sufficiently prepare for french interviews with in this amout of time, but I am apprehensive, I may still not be as good as the expected levels.

Pls advise folks, I have to take a descision based upon your inputs.

Another question is should I necessarily apply through an immigration attorney, as I have read the application procedure and I feel that I should be able to it on my own, what is the most value added activity that the immigration attorneys give? is it worth going through them.

Regards,
Ravi

Dear AHBS

i also don't have any knowledge of french, but i have applied to Quebec and now waiting for next step. i advice you to apply and then start learning french. one year is enough to learn a language, and even if you didn't become too expert at the time of entry, it will satisfy the IO that you are interested in Quebec values.

for second part, NO. i applied on my own and got AOR that my documents are compete.

contact me if you need any assistance.

There would be problem if they call for interview which are pretty much chances they will. Quebec immigration website clearly states that applicant must have strong knowledge of French. As above members advised, start learning from now. You should able to at least answer/reply normal life question/discussion etc o at least an Immigration Interview. Good luck

Hey Mahharrouf

i admit u need french in the interview.. but not at the time of applying..it takes arnd 5-7 months to get an interview which is sufficient for a person to learn as much french to converse briefly..i guess that will be enuf..ofcourse u need to study it further to b able to adapt in quebec..

i can site my example i m in level 6 now...can have more or less discussion in french on alomost anything ofcourse with some errors!..took me 15 months.. but at level 3 itself i cud speak basic...

Hope that helps...

Shahi

Hi Shahi, Angeleye,

Thanks for youe help, can you advise if taking TEF is mandatory, instead can I just learn french from Alliance Francaise and clear a few levels so that I can converse in basic french.

I am asking this because in my city the Alliance Francaise does not coach for TEF, they do their DELF (or similar thing) which is a general purpose french classes, can I take these classes and pick up enough french to clear the TEF exams?

Regards

Hello AHBS,

As Angel & Shahi told u, u can go on starting from now to learn french..it's not an impossible task.
You may be asked to provide a justification for your level in french language..which is th TEF exam.
Of course if u had Alliance Française course u'll be able to get an acceptable level in TEF.

In conclusion, yes french is mandatory..as long as u r willing to live in a french speaking province..but still u have have enough time to learn french & to prove to them that u r sincerely willing to learn/speak/use french.
So good luck for u :).

About hiring an attorney..well, since u checked the process carefully & believe u can pass through it by urself..then go on & do it by urself..it's a straight forward process & as I believe most of us r going through it without hiring an attorney.
Angel did..I did..& I guess Shahi as well. ;)

@ Shahi..
Me too..i did not receive my AOR yet!! :(
I sent my application on April 11th. to Damascus office..but still got nothing after a whole month! :(

@ Angel..
Wish us luck.. :)

Hi Angeleye, Shahi, Iceberg,

Thanks a lot guys.
I had another doubt, I am going to take up Alliance Francaise DELF DALF course, which isn't a coaching for TEF, but is a certificate with different levels in itself, so as Iceberg said even this course will be helpful in passing a TEF with acceptable score, I wanted to ask whether after doing this course is it still a requirement that I pass a TEF to justify that I speak good enough french for Quebec purpose, from what I have heard and read TEF isn't a mandatory thing, all that is required if a good oral and written knowledge of french whetehr or not the candidate has done a TEF.

Another thing is that my area of specialization is Actuarial science from the list 2009 training list, and I have obtained qualification from India, should I also get it assesed from the canadian equivalent agency, any of you guys have done such an assement then pls pour some light on this area.

Angleeys, I have cleared my inbox, feel free to corresposnd via PM.

Au revoir à bientôt
Ravi
