Dear all
My husband and me did a soft landing to Canada on 7th March and we returned to India on 16th March. Automatically, at the time of landing, we have applied for PR card. We had to come back due to family and job reasons. We would like to return to Canada within two months. I understand that we have to apply PRTD to travel back to Canada. I have a few clarification here.
1) is there any chance that PRTD application will be rejected? In case if it's rejected, can we apply again? Or can we wait for the PR card to be delivered to our local address and if someone can bring it or courier it? In such case, can we use the PR card itself for traveling to Canada (though PRTD was rejected)?

2) if we get PRTD and if we are traveling to Canada, (after the PR card is issued to our local address in Canada), can we show the PRTD at immigration check?

Kindly reply.

If you have only recently landed as permanent residents, there are no good reasons for PRTD denial, unless you mess up the application. The PRTD is a travel document that gets you on the aircraft. You can show it to CBSA on arrival but it's not mandatory, as long as they are able to identify you as a permanent resident.

Thank you very much for your reply. But I came to know from cic website that we have to apply for PRTD before travel. We have to show this document as a proof of our PR status in Canada. Without this, the airline authority will not issue our boarding pass. Is this not correct?

You apply for a PRTD whilst in your home country and show it if asked at check in for your flight back to Canada. Without a PR card or a PRTD the check in staff should not issue you a boarding pass.

Obviously better to have a PR card but if timing or getting the cards couriered to you in time before you return to Canada best to apply for a PRTD as a backup. Will not matter at all if the PR cards have been issued as this would be no different to people who forget to take their card with them when they travel.

Sorry. I think I have misunderstood your reply. That's why I sent a previous message. Now it's clear. We have to get PRTD before travel.

Thanks.

Thank you. One more doubt is if we apply for PRTD and mean while the pr card is issued to our local address in Canada, are we eligible to travel with PRTD because pr card is issued already according to cic. But we are carrying only PRTD.
One more doubt is can we give educational and job reasons in the PRTD application, for coming back to India?

Thank you all. Can we give job and educational reason for coming back to India? I asked vfs global in India and they said it would take minimum 25 working days for processing the application. Is it true? And they are not able to say the maximum or minimum validity? If PRTD application is rejected, can we re-apply again?

Thanks

Dear all,

Can anyone please clarify if in case PRTD is rejected and if pr card is issued to the local address in Canada, can we use that to travel if we get it through any means?

If you get your PR card couriered to you in India of course you can use that in the unlikely event a PRTD application is refused. Unlikely to be refused unless you mess up filling in the application.

Even if your PR card is issued and remains at local address and then you get a PRTD approved you can use the PRTD to travel back. The whole purpose of a PRTD is for people without access to their PR card either for example if they forgot it or as in your case was not issued before you had to leave.

Thank you all for the reply messages. We have another clarification. We landed in Canada on 7th March and We are checking the CIC website everyday to get an update on the PR card. But the status shows only 'submitted'. It has been one month since we applied for PR card. Is there any other way to know if PR card is being processed? Is there any contact email through which we can know the status?

Thanks.

Processing time for new PR cards takes two months and then you have to factor in additional time for mailing. You only landed a month ago. It's far too early to be expecting your PR cards to be ready. You'll receive your PR cards 9-10 weeks after landing - no sooner.
