Hi,
I will be visiting Canada this July/August and am hoping to work there in the hospitality sector during the busy summer months to support my travel. I have friends who said they have found it easy to get work in bars and ski resorts. However I'm not sure how they did it!
I have applied for a temp work visa through the CIC. I've done all the Kompass stuff, I have my CAL and all documents sorted out except for the Application for Work permit (the main one!). I'm beginning to worry because I don't know if I've gone about this the right way. I don't have a prospective employer and an offer of employment, let alone LMIA number. Does everyone need to do this?? I just didn't want to turn up looking for casual summer jobs without a work visa, but it looks like this is a more serious application than I originally thought.

Does anyone know if there is a more 'casual' working holiday visa, or if there's a way I can contact potential... bars/restaurants/cafes... or have I seriously screwed up.

Thanks very much,
Alex

1. It sounds like you applied under International Experience Canada.
2. You should calm down and follow the instructions here: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/work/iec/apply.asp
3 As you have your cal, you have to upload the documents including the police certificate and CV with the work permit application
4. ONce you complete that step you will be issue a Letter of Introduction, then you arrive at the Port of Entry with your proof of insurance and $2500 and the IO will then issue a work permit
5 A LMIA is not required under the IEC

Hi PMM,

Thanks very much for your response!

Yes, I am applying under the IEC. I already have done what you outlined and have my CAL and all the documents. I now see that there is a difference between a work permit and an OPEN work permit.
My problem is filling out the Work Permit Application where it asks me for employer details and LMIA number. If as you say, the LMIA isn't required under the IEC, should I just leave this blank? And then will I receive an open work permit on entry to Canada (if I am successful in getting my LOI)?

Job Offer........
Pre-Assessed..
Have you looked at the guide? http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/guides/5487ETOC.asp

don't leave anything blank. Write "not applicable" or "N/A".

I just found you can leave questions 2-6 of the 'Intended Work in Canada' section blank if you are applying for an open work permit.

It won't let me post a link but if you go to the immigration FAQ's it is under the question 'Are there different applications for regular and open work permits?'

Thanks :)
