Proof of legal status in the US.

Hi. I know that when you send the application, if we residing in the country in which we were born it, we must send a proof of legal status or a proof of legal entry into the US for a period of 1 year. Now, my question is this: When requested, do we send the original document proving the legal status or we send only a copy? I am asking this is because I am out of status now. However, I was legal for 2 years about 4 years ago. Now, I do not have the original US Work Permit. I only have the copy. Will they ask for the original one?
