Hope you all are keeping safe and healthy. I am from India and have applied to Canadian universities for masters program. Hope to get the admits soon. In tandem, I am starting to collate the funds for the program. In lieu of this, my question is particularly related to Employee Provident Fund (EPF) and what all comes under Proof of Funds.
  1. In India there is a certain percent of your basic salary gets deducted and the amount accumulates in your EPF account (maintained by govt or trusts) and an employee can withdraw that amount on retirement or on leaving a job. Can I show these funds as a proof?
  2. Can the spouse provident fund accumulations be used to apply for the visa or does it have be my own?
  3. Alternatively what all can be shown as CIC's website does not give a clear explanation of what can be or cannot be classified under POF.

For studies, the proof of funds are to prove that you can support yourself for the duration of your studies (tuition, living expenses etc.). EPF is not liquid fund but you should be able to withdraw it during your duration of studies, hence it can be shown as a PoF for studies. This is different for PR where there is a requirement for liquid funds for settlement (mainly at the time of landing). Spouse's PF can be added.

Others:
1. Bank balance
2. Fixed deposits
3. Bonds
4. Mutual Funds
5. GIC
6. Bank loan (educational)
7. Proof that you have paid university registration fee, housing, semester fee prior to joining, if any
