http://atlantic.ctvnews.ca/n-l-professor-seeks-canadian-citizenship-as-refugee-of-trump-presidency-1.3262043

Story about another refugee from Trump, which contains the information that his mother is from Ontario. What he and the reporter don't seem to realize is that the professor is already Canadian. There is no oath to the Queen involved.

What a tool. Could have been officially recognized as a citizen decades ago but obviously couldn't be bothered to do the research. If he really applied for citizenship rather than confirmation - it's going to be refused.

Not sure why you need to point out about no oath to the Queen. That is unrelated to the article itself.

Basically the professor was already Canadian since birth and he tried to politicalized the issue about Trump. It is a non-issue as he was already Canadian long before Trump came along.

Did you read the entire article? I suspect not. It specifically says that he doesn't want to take the oath to the Queen and that's why he didn't consider applying earlier.

Well, not decades ago. One report says his mother went to the U.S. around WWII, and she probably became a U.S. citizen. So, she (and the prof) didn't become Canadians until 2009 or 2015, depending on whether she became American before or after 1947. "He’s prepared now to declare his allegiance at a citizenship ceremony." If so, he'll be disappointed. There is no ceremony.

I wrote to the professor to inform him of his status.

My apology, I missed that part of the article. He must be happy to know that he didn't need to say his oath to the Queen. However he will be disappointed in that he is legally the Queen's subject.

No kidding.

For those who understand how the rules work, this article really doesn't make him sound very smart.

Even natural born Canadians can "reaffirm" their commitment to Canada by participating in a citizenship ceremony. Heck, the Harper government had a bunch of bureaucrats do it for a photo op once.

"As a longtime permanent resident of Canada, the transition to dual citizenship is in some sense a formality"

There is another bit of fake news in that article. Formality? Yeah, not exactly....

Fair enough - you're right. Nice of you to write to him. Although you may be taking the wind out of his sails from a publicity perspective. :)

I received a reply from the professor. He says he found out "many years ago" that he has no claim to Canadian citizenship, and that's that. Apparently, he ignored the part of my e-mail that mentioned new legislation. So, yes, it looks like he doesn't want to know the truth.

You mentioned that his application for citizenship by naturalization would be refused. However, I don't see on the application where it asks for his parents' names or places of birth, so how would they know?

Did you email the reporter?
