Processing times change the game

I am a Canadian living in Thailand with my Thai wife. I want to go home with my wife. Processing times for Spouse Sponsorship is 39 days for sponsor eligibility, and 29 months for the application. Two questions: 1. If I am deemed eligible as a sponsor, does that mean that my wife's application will be automatically accepted? and 2. If the answer to 1. is "yes", would it be wise to move to Canada, my wife on a tourist visa, while waiting for the 29 months? During that time, I read it's possible for her to ask for a work permit after 16 months... Thanks for any advice on this.

1. Being approved as a sponsor does not mean that the PR application is guaranteed to be approved.
2. If you can get a TRV, then she could come visit you. She cannot move to Canada until she is a PR.

Work permits are only available for inland applicants.

Note that not all applications will take the full 29 months. Check the Singapore thread for a better idea of timelines.

Once you are approved as sponsor they transfer your application to then assess your wife.

You are assessed separately. First you then the applicant so no your wofe wont be automatically accepted.

They check you for eligibility - are you canadian, have you been involved in other sponsorships, are yoh on welfare etc.

Then with your wife theyll look at how genuine your relationship is, check her medicals and her background for criminality.

Work permits are only possible if you apply inland which take upwards of 24 months and she would get a work permit within 4-6 months. She needs to be in canada lwgally for this though. Issue here however is that she wont be able to leave canada until the application is finalised ao she wont be able to return to thailand for any reason without risking the whole application.

Outland means no work rights until the process is over. Cic website says it takes 28 months but thats for 80% of the cases so it could be a lot earlier depending on how straight forward your application is

Thanks for the info Gary and Champion

I want to move back home quickly with my Thai wife. So, here's a plan.

1. Send the application package to Canada for sponsorship eligibility and PR application;
2. Once approved as sponsor, after a month, move to Canada with my wife (she on a tourist visa to be renewed every 6 months)
3. Change my address in my PR application from Thailand to Canada;
4. Wait 24-29 months in Canada - I understand that my wife may work legally after "a while" - no details available on this

If she has a TRV, she cannot "move" to Canada. Showing up at the border with all your belongings and announcing that you are moving to Canada is a great way to get refused entry and possibly get an exclusion order.

She can only work once she is a PR, or if she gets a work permit by finding an employer willing to go through the LMIA process.

You seem to have a wrong understanding of the process.
1. Your approval as a sponsor may take 1 month or longer, there is no guarantee.
2. Theres very little chance that your wife will get a tourist visa.
3. Are you currently a residing in Thailand?
4. Your wife will not get work permit at all while on tourist visa, and she cannot legally work in Canada until PR is approved.

29 months is not accurate. The times shown on website are worst-case times that only the slowest 20% of apps see. 80% are done quicker than the posted times.

If you have a straightforward app with no big red flags, then you should expect much quicker time vs the posted time. Check the thread here for your visa offce, to see people's actual recent processing times.
