PROBLEM with renewing work permit for less than 6 month-LMIA exempt

Hi all
I am on a temporary work permit which is expiring very soon. My job is LMIA exempt and my employer has extended my work for another 3 months.
I am trying to renew my work permit but the online system is saying:

"You cannot apply at this time. You must have a Labour Market Impact Asssessment issued by Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC)."

My job is LMIA exempt, why is the above message? Is it like LMIA exempt work cannot be renewed for less than 6 months?

Thanks for the reply. I am a postdoctoral fellow.
I figured it out. The issue was I had to select that "I am conducting research", to make it realize that it is LMIA exempt.
