Hi!
Thank you for reading. I need urgent help applying for an open work permit as the common-law partner of an international student. I am having trouble completing my online application.
My situation:
Me and my partner came together to Vancouver to study, she is at SFU and I already finished my program at Vancouver Film School. As some of you know, VFS isn't qualified for a post gradate open work permit , for that reason I am applying for the OWP considering my partner student status in order to be with her and support her while she finishes her program. We're both living together and my student status expires on November 30 so I have apply quickly. Her Status expires on May 2017 because her passport expires on that day. However her program is expected to finish on October 2017, she has to extend her permit once she gets her new passport.
My problem and questions:
1) when doing the process of applying online I encounter a problem when filling the eligibility questionnaire. One of the last questions I have to answer is if I have a written job offer ( which I don't).
-However if I select the option "no" the questionnaire ends, giving me the option to apply for a post graduate based on my answers.
-If I select the option "yes" I get more questions later, one of them asking me what is my current working situation. There i can select the option "I am the spouse or common-law partner of an international student". This way everything seems to make sense, I get the option to apply for a post graduate AND a work permit based on my answers. By doing it this way, the documents I am required to upload seems to be correct and related to the common law OPW, and they don't ask me to upload the written job offer.
I really need help from someone that has experienced me similar situation, and knows if I can actually apply online for this permit from within Canada or if I have to do it on paper. Having to select that I have a written job offer in order for the next questions to make sense seems weird to me. I tried calling to CIC help centre and they say I am indeed eligible to apply for this permit, and I should be able to do it online, but they don't know why the questionnaire is having this problem.
2. I am only asked to submit the standard form to change or extend my status, family form, other standard things and proof of status of my partner. Other than the statutory declaration of common law, and proof of my relationship, which other documents do you recommend me to upload?
Thank you for helping! I really don't know what else to do.
