Hello,

I'm just looking for input on my private work insurance. I'm the Canadian citizen and my husband is the PR applicant inland. I have Manulife insurance through work. I was initially able to add my husband as a beneficiary, there was nothing stating that he needed OHIP (we are in Ontario) to be covered. And he is listed as covered. But before we actually used any benefits for him, I asked Manulife if he was covered or if he needed to wait until he was eligible for OHIP. The initial person didn't know, and about 3 days later followed up saying they needed OHIP coverage.

I have searched these forums, and it seems that several people also have Manulife and their spouses (PR applicants) were covered without OHIP. Can anyone verify if they have had that experience?

Hi

There is private Manulife coverage for people without provincial coverage.

Otherwise, people who have gotten coverage through their spouse's employment plan without OHIP are in the same situation as you except that the insurance company hasn't yet caught up to the fact that they are covering ineligible people.

I have Manulife insurance through my employment benefits and they wouldn't cover medical costs for my husband until he has MSP coverage (the British Columbia version of OHIP). However, I can (and have already done so) add him as a beneficiary on the life insurance portion of my Manulife plan and that is fine regardless of his residency.

Your husband will not be covered under Manulife insurance. To be covered under that he should be eligible for OHIP and applied for it. You are just paying for insurance for nothing. You would only come to know when you start using it such as when you apply for the claim.

I am with IA and I had similar situation for my wife. So I asked them to reimburse for what I paid as premium because it is of no use. I took a private medical insurance, basically a travel insurance as she was in visitor’s visa.

What’s your husband’s immigration status in canada and where are you guys located? You can PM me to keep the details private. Thanks!
