Private health insurance in Ottawa

Hi All

I thought that once it came time I would have been able to add my husband to my insurance plan at work. What I have learned is that he would need his OHIP number before he could be covered.

My husband is now waiting for the visa to come to him and I am trying to get things ready here. Does anyone know where I would get private insurance for 3 month until he receives his OHIP card and I can add him to my work insurance?

I was thinking that maybe I just wouldn't get any and wait till everything just kicks in, he is very healthy but you never know what may happen. I think better safe than sorry.

You can try a company like RBC Insurance. They have a visitors to Canada plan:

Whether you can add him to your benefits plan at work once he has insurance depends on what your work plan allows. You'll have to check with your benefits provider directly.

My benefits plan didn't let me add my husband until he had an actual OHIP number. Having insurance wasn't sufficient. But again, you'll need to check with your provider to see what their rules are.
