Sorry if this topic already has occured a few times, but couldn't find the exact answer I'm looking for...

My wife is a graduated physiotherapist and she has about 4 years of foreign work experience with two employers (10 months + 3 years) in that occupation.

In Canada she has a little more than 1 year work experience as a Physiotherapy Assistant. In Canada the Assistant job is not regulated (they are supervised by physiotherapists), however NOC states that some specific studies (diplomas) might be required.

We would like to apply under CEC.

1. Should we choose Physiotherapist as primary occupation since she has the most experience (and studies) in that?

2. If somehow they wouldn't accept her foreign experience (problems with documents) would that effect the CEC application? (Failing in primary occupation)

3. She has a physiotherapist degree, but no certificates of beeing an assistant. Would that affect the acceptance of Physiotherapy Assistant as primary occupation?
(Obviously she is qualified for beeing a Physiotherapy Assistant because she is a Physiotherapist... )

Thanks a lot!

Out of curiosity, what is the NOC of a Physiotherapy Assistant, because I can't find it in the NOC list ?

1. Should we choose Physiotherapist as primary occupation since she has the most experience (and studies) in that?
As long as she has at least 1 year of work experience in her primary NOC, all her other work experience can be in a different NOC (as long as it is A, B or O), so it doesn't matter..

2. If somehow they wouldn't accept her foreign experience (problems with documents) would that effect the CEC application? (Failing in primary occupation)
Yes.

3. She has a physiotherapist degree, but no certificates of beeing an assistant. Would that affect the acceptance of Physiotherapy Assistant as primary occupation?

No. As long as she has reference letters that state her duties, etc.

Thanks a lot!

Thank you,

Physiotherapy Assistant is under NOC 3237 (Skill Level B). Probably we will change her primary occupation to that, because if she would fail under her Canadian work experience, she wouldn't be eiligble for Express Entry anyway... It seems less risky even if her education does not completely match.

She need an accredited physiotherapy assistant course/certification to officially work as physiotherapy assistant in Canada. It's a regulated profession. My friend was dentist from a foreign country but he still needed to do Dental assistant certification to work as Dental assistant in Canada.

I have just shared some info according to my friends case. It may not be true in your case. But I highly suggest to check and research everything extensively before starting the process. Good luck

Dude, I have the exact same case as yours. My wife was the principal applicant in our case (just recd stamped pp yesterday), she had 4 yrs exp from india and one yr esperience as PTA here in Canada after her one yr therapeutic recreation diploma.

I came on OWP last yr first when she got the job and it initially got refused because even while we chose 3237, they assessed her job in noc 3414 (also PTA). Second time i attached screenshots from hrsdc website while applying owp and it was approved. Ditto for our PR file under CEC category.

Now if you are applying under CEC (which you very well can with her experience), chose 3237. Make sure you have all the pertaining docs. If you want to apply under FSW, you may chose 3142 (but would need to ahow settlement funds). I would suggest going foR CEC.

PM me your number if you need anything else. Would be happy to help. All the best

Correction: PTA (or aligning titles in Noc 3237) is not a regulated profession in Canada. Physiotherapy is regulated. If you have even studied programs like health n fitness, healh management, recreation, kinesiology, gerantology, etc, you can find work as a PTA.

It is an entirely different ballgame for Dental assistant level I or II or even Pharmacy Technician since they are regulated.

Physiotherapy Assistant is not regulated, otherwise she wouldn't be able to do the job. She is a Physiotherapist which is much higher education than beeing an assistant. Physiotherapists give orders to the assistants, if it makes it clear. Maybe it's something that we should explain.

The only reason she worked as a PTA because she is working on her Canadian license for being a Physiotherapist. It takes a long time.

I also heard, that you don't have to fulfill the education requirements of NOC unless you are applying under FST program.

Just one last question, sorry if I seem dumb, but this whole process stresses me out... I want to do it right and just would like to have a clear answer. (When I called CIC they didn't answer this question. They said "it's out of mandate", "talk to an immigration lawyer..." )

Under CEC, is it mandatory to choose the occupation you have the Canadian Work Experience in as primary occupation, or it can be even something from the foreign work experience?

Thanks a lot...

As the name says "Canadian Experience Class", chose the occupation you have Canadian work experience in.

If you chose Physiotherapist as the primary occupation, you would qualify only under the FSW program. Generally, the CEC program is an easier application. Choice is yours.

2. If somehow they wouldn't accept her foreign experience (problems with documents) would that effect the CEC application? (Failing in primary occupation)

You would not have a CEC application if you only have foreign work experience in the "primary occupation." But the foreign work experience can still get you points in the CRS score. If you claim the experience, you will need to document it - otherwise, she could lose points in the evaluation stage (which makes the application precarious).

3. She has a physiotherapist degree, but no certificates of beeing an assistant. Would that affect the acceptance of Physiotherapy Assistant as primary occupation?

No - her education exceeds the minimum requirements, and it is not a regulated occupation. No worries for the education requirement. Even though the ECA is not required for CEC applicants, I would recommend it in this case (good for points, too), and she probably has already done that anyway...

I am an Optometrist working in India. Can I choose 3237 instead if 3121 as my duties and responsibilities matches both NOCs even more than 3237. Your insight plz.
