Hi

One my relative wnats to know if she move from Toronto to Calgary at her seventh month her ON Health card still can be used or she has to wait for another three months to get services. She would need to book Doctor and Hospital.

Please inform if some body knows this

To be eligible for OHIP, a person needs to be living in ON for at least 5 out of their first 6 months in the province and after that at least 6 months a year. If she has been in ON for at least 6 months out of the past 12, she would be perfectly safe to move now and have OHIP cover her until she gets AB health. However, if she has not been in ON that long, it is a bit risky to move now because if OHIP realizes that she did not fulfill their residency requirements, they could cancel her coverage and back charge her.

Oh Great, thanks Leon, just on your reply, yes she has been in ON and just renewed her OHIP card, she is also Citizen for last three years but just recently she went back in April, 2013 to Pakistan with pregnancy registered to a Doctor in ON and Medical record of her pregnancy is available.

But one interesting point I noted in your reply that if somebody has the situation as you said then why we say that Alberta offer medical coverage from day one. Just to tell you I saw these comments in some of our threads, I had the experience of getting AB health card replaced with OHIP after two months though, when I moved from Missisauga to calgary.

The waiting time in AB if you are moving province to province is actually not 3 months but 2 months plus the balance of the 3rd. Therefore, if you move to AB on any day in the month of July, you would get health coverage in AB on October 1st.

If you move from overseas, you would get first day coverage in AB. That's what they mean by first day coverage.
