I am a friend of someone who is from Norway and has a visa for 6 months. She is young, 25 i believe and engaged to a Canadian citizen, she too wants to become a Canadian citizen. That being said she recently found out she is pregnant, that being said, a couple questions come to mind:

1) Is it true the process of becoming a Canadian citizen takes more than 6 months?
2) Will she be deported because her visa is up? (Even though she's pregnant and engaged)
3) Is it true that it is illegal to leave the country being pregnant when the father is in Canada?
4) What steps are to be taken in order for her to become a happy Canadian citizen before the birth of her child?
5) With all that above, is her visa to be "voided" -so to speak- because of all this?

Before she can become a Canadian citizen, she has to become a permanent resident and physically be present in Canada for 3 years after becoming a PR. Days spent before becoming PR are counted as half day as long as they took place in the 4 years prior to application for citizenship. To become a PR, she has to be married to a Canadian citizen or PR or be in a common law relationship. Her husband or partner has to sponsor her. Application process should take about a year all together before she becomes a PR.

Almost no country gives you citizenship before you accumulate residency days as a permanent resident. So there is no way she can become a citizen in less than 6 months or before her baby is born. Not in Canada. It will probably take her at least 5 years from now if she were to apply for PR this month.

When her authorized stay expires, she will have to leave or extend her stay as a visitor. In most cases, if granted extension, it will be for another 6 months.

1. Yes, a lot more.

2. Yes, if she lets her visit visa expire, she will be deported if immigration finds her. If she wants to stay, she should apply to extend her visit visa before it expires.

3. No, it is not illegal to leave the country while pregnant. However, if she is not 100% sure about this guy, she could be in trouble if she gives birth in Canada. He could request joint custody of the child which means she can not leave with the child. If he decides he does not want to sponsor her for PR after all, she is unable to stay in Canada but also is not allowed to remove the child from Canada.

4. Not possible. They have to get married and her husband has to sponsor her for PR (permanent residency). If they apply through London (because London is responsible for Norway, it would take at least 6 months to get her PR. With PR, she can stay in Canada indefinitely. After getting PR, she must live in Canada for 3 years before being able to apply for citizenship.

5. Her visit visa will not be cancelled because of this but she needs to do something before it expires.

Another thing to consider is that as a visitor, she does not have health care coverage. That means that the hospital bill for having this baby which could be thousands of $ must be paid by her or her fiancee. IMO, because of that and question 3), she would be better off going home to Norway and having the baby there and tell her fiance that if he wants her and the baby in Canada, he needs to sponsor her for PR first. The baby would get citizenship even if it is born in Norway because the father is Canadian.
