Before landing airline will give you a form. You must declare everything that you are bringing on that form. When you go to immigration counter, you will show them your papers and they will know that you are a newcomer and you have to tell them that there are some goods to be followed, just follow their instructions. Its unlikely that they allow food items after declaring on the form.

Hi,

As you are going to land, you may bring many of your clothing, household utensils and valuable items.
You will get one form in the airplane before landing. Fill it up for customs purpose.
If you have only reasonable quantity of jewelry no need to give exactly what you have.
No need to mention itemized details of your clothing, shoes etc if you carry in the checked baggage.
You can tell the customs officer that you have only used dress in your bags and some processed food stuff.
You cannot take any raw fruits or vegitable, plants etc. No problem for spices, dry fruits and cooked and packed food stuff like bakery items, sweets etc in sealed pack.

If you are sending seperately a cargo shipment by air or ship, for household items and utensils, you have to fill up Form B4,( which is called Goods to follow ) with brief details as example shown below: You can get Form B4 or B4A from CIC website and fill up while you pack the stuff for shipment. Also bring your packing slip and airway bill from the Cargo company.

Sample deatils to give in the Form B4 ( better you list the items in group. Costly stuff can be listed seperately )

Dress assorted : 10 or 20 sets ...value CAD 200.
Bed spreads and sheets: 12
Bath towels : 6
Window curtains: 6 sets.
Carpet/rug : 3
Shoes : 5 pairs
Kitchen cookware assorted: 12 pcs
Mixer/grinder: one
Dinner set: one
Assorted crockery : 12 pieces
Cutlery (assorted) two set
Processed food stuff : 5 packets
Miscellaneous kitchen ware: 15 pieces
.....

.....

No need to declare currency if less than 10,000/- dollars
No need to declare property in your home country

The Form B4 ( Goods to follow) is to be shown to the first counter where the Customs officer sit. An officer will review and give you a stamped " Casual Goods Accounting Document" together with your packing list obtained from the Cargo shipping agent.
These documents are required while clearing your cargo when arrive later in Canada by air or ship.

Hope this will help.
