Hello

Can a foreign national that needs to do their practicum (internship) come to Canada to do so? I saw that there are exemptions under R186, but my friend is studying hotel restaurant management. Any insight would be appreciated.

Thank you

It will likely be extremely hard to do. Your friend will need a work permit which requires a job offer and approved LMIA from the employer. The R186 exemption only applies to health care workers. The LMIA process is quite involved, will require the employer to prove no Canadian could be found for the role, and will take 4-6 months to process (without knowing if the LMIA will be approved),

What country is your friend from?

Hi, thanks for replying. That's what I thought it would be after reading more into R186. The LMIA process alone I doubt would go through. He is in the Philippines.

I asked about the country because I was wondering if an IEC visa was possible as a means of getting here on a work permit. Unfortunately the Philippines is not one of the countries on that list.

Unfortunately I don't really see any options for your friend.

I appreciate the time you took to answer. Thanks again.
