Hi

My father is a permenant resident for past 2 years, and his original country passport has expired. Is it mandatory that he renews the passport? Is there any implication if he stays without renewing his passport?

-no it is not mandatory...your father's PR status has nothing todo with his home country passport. yes if he wanted to travel outside canada then he needs a passport.
-even if his PR card expires he can still live in canada without applying a PR renewal. Pr status never expires unless CIC revoke the status due to certain reasons (e.g serious crime, not meeting residence obligations etc etc)

hope it helps

To come as a visitor, he would first need to formally renounce his PR status.

His wife can always sponsor him for PR again in the future if he wants to live in Canada permanently.
