All,

I got my PR (AINP) in Aug-2011 but this year I started my MBA in US, which means I will not be able to go back to Canada till May-2014. I can try to make brief trips ( 4-5days) between now and May-2014 but will not be able to move permanently till 2014 May.

Is travelling to Canada for short stints of (4-5 days) going to help in anyway or is my PR status going to be in trouble because of the large amount of time spent outside of Canada.

Thanks in advance for the help an suggestions.

To maintain PR status, you must physically live in Canada for two years out of every five rolling years (these days don't have to be consecutive). If you cannot meet this residency requirement - then yes, your PR status could certainly be in trouble.

Between Aug 2011 and Aug 2016 you need to have 730 days of physical presence in Canada to maintain your PR status and apply to renew your PR Card.....keep a record of your entries and exits into Canada/ US...border officials do not always stamp passports so request a stamp (politely) where one is not placed in your passport (this is more likely to be on the Canadian side).

But would short trips back to Canada still count towards the 730 days (even if they are just 4 days here, 4 days there?) provided that they are, of course, documented in some way (with either passport stamps, travel records, etc.)?

Sorry if it's a stupid question, but I'm in the process of assembling my documents for PR Card renewal, and wish to be 100% accurate in reporting all my days in Canada (no more, no less).

All trips to Canada count. Any part of a day spent in Canada counts as a full day towards the residency requirements. If you go to Canada on a Friday evening and leave again on Sunday, you would have 3 days in Canada for that week.
