PR time and work permit question

I am currently working in Canada at a steady job. My work permit expires in 1.5 years. I am applying for PR within the next month (pending notary and other documentation finalizing).

How long does it take to find out if PR is granted? My PR points are at 425, which seems to be on the cusp of previous cut-off scores so I don’t know what to expect...?

Planning for the worst, if I don’t get PR, will I have enough time to apply to renew my work permit? I have a husband and child to support and worry about interrupting medical benefits.

Thanks for any advice anyone might offer!

Cut off scores for Express Entry are currently 460+. Unfortunately you should not expect to be selected with a score of 425 - that's too low. You'll need to look to increase your score to have a shot at Express Entry - or alternatively, look into the Provincial Nomination Programs instead to see if those might work for you.

If you aren't selected for PR, then to renew your work permit, you need an approved LMIA from your employer.

I am eligible for PNP for my province in all ways except I only have $10K and not the $18K required in my bank accounts (including RRSP)...this is a deal breaker I believe so I’m not applying for PNP in my province.

Thanks for your advice! My employer is all set and approved so at least there’s that?!

I was a doctoral student for 6 years here in Canada and didn’t finish. So none of my work experience during that time counts. I’m 45 so unfortunately all of my really wonderful work experiences prior to moving here doesn’t really count either because the scoring only looks at the past 10 years. I only have 3 years full time work experience to submit as a result.

Sounds like I should work here longer and maybe apply for PR in a couple of years to boost my points through more work experience here?

When you say your employer is all set and approved - what do you mean by that? Has he obtained an approved LMIA for your role?

Sure - you could work here for a few more years to get additional points. To extend your work permit, your employer will need to obtain an approved LMIA. Keep in mind that immigration program rules do change from time to time so there's no guarantee that working additional years here will get your PR.
