PR Renewal

Hi Team,
I have a sticky situation, I'm lagging behind on my PR renewal application - it expires on July 7th 2016, adn I am still finishing up the form adn getting my docs together..

Background - My taxes are yet to be filed for the last couple of years (I was a student for the last year and did'n earn anything, and the previous year i was out of the country). I also dont meet residency obligations at first sight, but had accompanied my citizen ex-husband (i'm now divorced) abroad for 2 years, lived separately abroad for 1 year. I have his offer letter, experience certificate and a housing lease agreement for 1 year with both our names in it together. Unfortunately, that's the only proof I have as of now, and will have to go back to the country to get any other documents such as bank statements certifying both our addresses were the same etc.

My question is - Since im running out if time, can i go ahead and submit my renewal kit without tax returns and then add them within the next two weeks (my accountant needs a weeks time to review them)?

Would there be any problems with this / anything else given that mine is a complicated case?

Thanks heaps,

It is not possible to run out of time in order to renew your PR card. As long as you meet the residency obligation, your PR status is fine. Just the card will expire. You can renew it even years later.

Does that mean, I can stay and work in canada with an expired card?

Im looking for jobs right now, so just want to make sure it wouldn't be an issue, while I'm in the process of getting a renewed pr card.

Yes, it is perfectly legal to stay and work in Canada with an expired PR card. However, some employers may ask to see your card so if you are looking for a job right now, it would be good to have one.
