PR, moving/working abroad, consequences

Hi everyone,

So my husband and I are in a bit of a tricky situation. We have been PRs since April 2023.

Due to personal/family matters I will have to relocate, for about a year, back to my home country. The time to do this will have to be sometime in the middle of this year (once we hit the 730 day mark).

my questions were
1) as long as I meet residency requirements will moving abroad temporarily affect my PR renewal or potential citizenship application? What are some issues I should prepare for?


2) What happens if I end up taking a job while I live there? How will this impact the renewal or citizenship process?


We do plan to move back to Canada atleast for half the year starting 2026. It’s just the time in between.

1) Record your residency dates correctly and retain certain proof/evidence;
2) As long as you renew the PR card at the right time, then your PR renewal would be good. For citizenship, you need at least 1095 days in order to be eligible to apply for the first place. Can you take a job there while not requires you to live there?

2) we were planning to come back to Canada for a few months at a time to make up the rest of the days to add up to 1095 days (I’m registered at UofT as a second degree student and usually take courses in one semester of the year).

Would this work out? Or would IRCC be not too pleased?

Ideally for this year if I could get a remote job from an employer in Canada, so that I could live in my home country - that would be ideal. But i haven’t found anything yet

The issue is my parents health, I would like to be around to take care of them for a bit.

You won't be able to use a remote job with a Canadian employer to count towards the 1,095 days for citizenship. For this, you need to by physically in Canada. There are some very narrow exceptions (i.e. being a Crown Servant who works abroad), but this doesn't apply to and is not possible to obtain for most people.

Also remember the 1,095 days for citizenship is a rolling requirement, so if you've lived in Canada continuously since April 2023, the earliest days will start falling out of the 5 year window from April 2028.

The 1,095 days need not be continuous, so your plan of coming to Canada for a few months at a time is fine as long as you can accumulate the required number of days before the first days from your initial stay fall out of the window, as per my comment above.

Keep in mind that with an imminent election on the horizon, all of these rules for citizenship and RO may well change given immigration is such a hot button topic. Be prepared for changes that may change your current plan.
