Hi Team,
We have moved from US 3.5 years back on PR. Our daughters (4 and 6 years old) are US passport holders as they were born in US and they have Canadian PR. Now we are eligible to apply for Canadian Citizenship. We are not sure what shall we do or don't do for our daughters. Could you please guide us on below questions:
  • Can we apply for our Canadian Citizenship only and don't do anything for our daughters as of now ?
  • Do we need to apply for Canadian Citizenship for my daughters as well or they can stay in Canada on PR even after we become Canadian Citizens by simply renewing their PR cards ?
  • Can my daughters PR cards be renewed without dependency on our PR Cards or our Canadian Citizenship ?
Thanks in advance to the team.

  1. Yes.
  2. They can stay PRs.
  3. Yes.
Your daughters can stay PRs if you want, but is there a reason why you don't want them to be Canadian citizens? The US allows multiple citizenships, so there is no risk of them losing American citizenship if they become Canadian citizens too. If your daughters are still PRs, they still need to maintain their residency obligation to keep it. If later on when they are no longer your dependent children, if they are outside of Canada and do not meet the obligation, they might lose their PR status and you would not be able to help them out if they wanted to come back to Canada.
