Hi everone,

Your advice please.

I landed in Canada in Sep 2012 for one week only. I was back to Canada in June 2014 for one month. Then just before the expiry of my PR card by 10 months I returned to Canada in Dec 2016 for permanent settlement. I passed smoothly through the airport without any struggle with the immigration officer. This mean I am in Canada only for 11 months in the first 5 years. My decision is to apply for the PR first renewal when I complete 2 years in Canada. However, I was told that even if I completed 2 or even more than 3 years before I apply for renewal or for citizenship, they will look for the 5 years after the landing not before my application. They said this a new regulation started after Oct-2017 to look for the 5 years after landing not before application. Is this correct news. What is your advice?

IRCC will look back 5 years from the date you sign the renewal app.

Many thanks for your kind reply. This information is optimistic. I hope you are correct and my friend is wrong. He said that he knows someone who complete continuous 3 years when he applied for citizenship 3 months ago, but they asked him to apply for humanitarian and Compassionate G as he didn’t meet the RO of the 2 years in the first 5 years after landing. I hope my friend just misunderstand his friend situation.

Everyone "knows someone" who had "whatever" happen. Read the IRCC website instead of listening to people who have no idea what they are talking about.

Many thanks,
You are completely correct. In IRCC website said: "...you must have been physically present in Canada for a minimum of 730 days within the past five (5) years."
