Hi All,

I would like to clarify the residency requirement related to the PR renewal process. My understanding is that a permanent resident must have been physically present in Canada for at least 730 days (2 years) within the last 5 years in order to be eligible for a PR card renewal.

Currently, I have met this requirement, having lived in Canada for 2 years within the past 5 years since receiving my PR. I am now applying for a PR card renewal, but I may need to stay outside of Canada for a few more years after receiving the renewed card.

Would it be acceptable to leave Canada for the next couple of years and return later, as long as I maintain the 2 out of 5 years residency requirement when it comes time to renew again?

The residency obligation is a rolling obligation. This means that at any given time, you must be able to look at the previous five year period and have spent at least 730 days of that five year period in Canada. As long as you meet this requirement on a rolling / ongoing basis, you are good.

Would add that if you have already left Canada when you apply to renew your PR card you may need to pick up your new card in person.
