Hello everyone,

My PR expired 5 years ago.. I am 28 years old now.. I left Canada and couldn't go back. I applied for renewal back then, they asked for more proofs but i didn't reply. I was finishing my studies in my country. My question is: Can i apply for a visiting or a student visa and just ignore my expired PR or will it cause me a problem ? Whats my best bet now. I actually want to study in Canada. and would be able to reapply from the start as a Phd student for example ?

Yes - you can apply for a visitor visa or a student visa. If you applied to renew your PR card and did not reply when they asked for more proof, then CIC would have refused your renewal application and canceled your PR status. To qualify for a student visa you would first need to be accepted by a school in Canada for a specific program. Once you are accepted, you will apply for a study permit - and include proof of your ability to finance these studes and also evidence of ties to your home country (to show CIC that you plan to return home once your studies are complete). If you have further questions about study permits, I would recommend that you post them to the International Students section of the forum.
