Hi experts,

Me and my family had PR which expired in 2017. We could not complete the resedincy requirement as we returned to our home country after staying in Canada for 9 months only.

Can we renew the PR from our home country or we have to reapply... or how to go about it..

Please suggest,
Thank you.

PR status never expires it can only be renounced or revoked. Only PR cards expire

Sure you can reapply from scratch again if you qualify although first you would need to renounce your current PR status.

Assume by expire you mean that your PR cards expired or you failed in 2017 to meet the 2 years out of 5 years since landing

You cannot renew your PR cards for example from outside of Canada so if ever planning to return you would need to apply for PRTDs which would probably lead to your PR status being revoked for failing the RO.

The only other alternative if you have US visas would be to try returning via the US/Canada land border but the odds would likely be high of being reported having failed the RO by such a long time leading to your PR status being revoked. This is probably not a good option for your case given the potential outcome/risk although if you did manage to enter without being reported you could stay put for 2 plus years and then your RO would be reset.

Above my personal view and should be read as such
