PR card Renewal Question

Hi Guys - I had a quick question on PR card renewal.

When you send your application for PR card renewal for the 1st time how do they determine whether you satisfy permanent residency obligations. How to they determine you are in Canada for 730 days of rolling period. Do they look at the entry and exist stampings on passport or do we need to submit any other documents like house lease agreement , utility bills etc etc . Thanks in advance.

You will claim how many days you were in Canada by listing your background history for the past 5 years, where you have been living, where you have been working or studying and where and when you have traveled.

I don't work for immigration but I think most likely they will compare this info to what they have on file and what they can get from other government agencies. Say you claim you are working for such and such employer, they can ask cra for your tax records and find out which years you have filed taxes. The employer also reports to cra so they would have this info as well even if you haven't bothered to file yourself.

They can also compare your travels to their records on your entries, possibly not exits because they have not been conducting exit checks although they are planning to do that in the future but they do work with the US border for example so if you say you went to the US, they could find out when you arrived there if your passport was scanned.

If you are very close to the 730 day limit or they find some discrepancies in what you claim compared to the info they have, they will call you for a residency questionnaire and you will have to prove what you claimed.

From what I was told by CRA, no one can access your information due to the privacy act. So, if this is the case, how could CIC get any information from other government agencies? I don't think they can...When I called CRA, I was enquiring about my Option C, and luckily for me, the agent I spoke with also went through sponsoring her spouse, so she understood my situation very well. She told me that CIC cannot gain access to your CRA information, and they "never" call CRA (the two agencies are totally separate and do not cooperate with each other due to the relevant laws in place)...

Not sure, though, as Leon basically contradicted what I was told...also, the CIC call center agent also told me the same thing that the CRA agent said...

Confused! Who is right?

Maybe you are right and they don't work with CRA but somehow they seem to be able to check if people have been working where they say they have so if they don't get that from CRA, they must get it from somewhere else.

In any case, if you lie, you risk that what you say will contradict something CIC knows so you will have some explaining to do.

I would guess since it is impossible for CIC to get info from other government agencies, they must actually contact employers to verify employment.

Lying would be stupid...you always want to be honest...
